Pellston History

Pellston is situated on the border between Maple River Township and McKinley township in Emmet County, Michigan. Maple River Township was established in 1877 by county supervisors. Egleston Township was established in 1897, but the name was later changed to McKinley Township in 1903.

Pellston is considered the "Icebox of the Nation" as their motto states. The Village of Pellston recorded the state of Michigan's record low temperature, a frigid -53°F. in 1933, and every winter is regularly called out in national weather reports as one of the coldest spots in the nation.
