Cheboygan Information & Overview

Cheboygan is a harbor town situated at the mouth of the Cheboygan River along the shoreline of Lake Huron. Located only 15 minutes from Mackinaw City and offers visitors and vacationers a host of things to do and see all year long.

The city shares it's name with the county in which it resides. There are many speculations about the origin of the city's name. Many speculate that the name originated from the Cheboygan River, but there are no records supporting that theory. Others believe the city was after an Ojibwe word, zhaabonigan, which means "sewing needle". Some people say the name may have come from "Chabwegan," meaning "a place of ore" and yet others claim it is an Indian name meaning "through passage" (referring to the 38.2 mile Inland Waterway Route).
