Built in 1844 on the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior, Fort Wilkins is a well-preserved example of mid-19th-century army life with 19 buildings, 12 of which are original structures dating to the 1840s. The site also includes the Copper Harbor Lighthouse with a restored 1848 lightkeeper’s dwelling, 1866 lighthouse and 1933 steel light tower. The Copper Harbor Lighthouse marks the entrance to one of Michigan’s northernmost harbors.

Hours
Fort Wilkins: 8:30 a.m. to dusk, mid-May to mid-October.
Copper Harbor Lighthouse: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day

There is a charge for boat rides to and from the Copper Harbor Lighthouse. A Recreation Passport in required for entry. Wheelchair accessible in most areas.

Fort Wilkins and Copper Harbor Lighthouse are located in Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, on the Keweenaw Peninsula, one mile east of Copper Harbor on U.S. 41.
