Get away to Grand Marais - The U.P.’s Wilderness Playground

Leave the city behind - get away to nature in abundance!

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore begins just west of town and stretches 42 miles along Superior’s shore. The Grand Sable Dunes, Sable Lake, AuSable Lighthouse, and Sable Falls are all within a short distance. Camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, wildlife, birdwatching…your own personal adventure awaits!

Camping
Woodland Park is our full-service campground right on Lake Superior. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to the west and Lake Superior State Forest to the east offer 665 campsites within 20 miles of town.

Fishing
Catch whitefish right from our pier, or head to one of the many inland lakes and rivers to try your hand at perch, bass, pike, and trout. Fishing charters are available

Biking
We have the quiet, scenic roads you’re looking for! Bikes can be rented in town. Our self-guided historic tour makes a great 2.7 mile ride, with 25 stops around Grand Marais.

Boating
Launch your craft at our marina, where you’ll also find fuel and dockage. There are boat launches at many of the inland lakes in the area. Grand Marais also marks the eastern end of the Hiawatha Water Trail, a 120-mile sea kayaking route extending along Lake Superior to Big Bay.

Hiking
Take a short stroll or a long-distance hike. The 3-mile walk from Hurricane River to Au Sable Light features shipwreck remains on the shore. Want a longer hike? The North Country Trail runs right through Grand Marais.

Family Fun
Spend the day at one of our beautiful beaches, go rock hunting, have a picnic, fly a kite over the lake, eat an ice cream cone, take a bike ride - relax and enjoy our friendly, small-town atmosphere.

History is everywhere in Grand Marais! We have three museums, two historic cemeteries, and a self-guided historic tour right in town. The Pickle Barrel House is one of Michigan’s most unique buildings and is open to the public.

Skywatching and Birdwatching
The endangered Piping Plover nests on our beaches, and a host of birds from swans to sandhill cranes frequent our shores. We have some of the darkest nighttime skies in the entire country, perfect for skywatching.

Winter Sports
Miles of groomed snowmobile, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe trails are waiting for you.
